Got a mentor?

In her post, Amy Goldwasser’s gives excellent (and frank) advise for something young adults are frequently told to do: getting and keeping a mentor. In the fall, I had many conversations with upperclassmen, and many (if not all) of them encouraged me to form relationships with adults on campus, whether it be a professor, a Dean, or a staff. Essentially, get a mentor! However, finding a mentor is not a simple task.

Telling someone to “find a mentor” is similar to instructing someone to “find a significant other.” In my case, I knew I didn’t want to rush into a relationship. I wanted my mentor to be someone I would want to talk to often, and feel comfortable doing so. So I “dated around” in the hopes of finding that person i would feel comfortable opening up to. My potential mentors were nice, influential, intelligent people…but for some reason I felt awkward and uncomfortable. I became discouraged.

Oftentimes, the person we are looking for is standing directly in front of us. I was taking a very demanding and challenging class in the Winter that required me to frequently meet with my professor. Because he was the “red pen,” I did not think of him as a potential mentor, even though I liked him as a person. However, after my classmates and I turned in our final assignment, he told us he was willing to be a resource and encouraged us to keep in touch with him. I took the offer.

Before you begin your search, I suggest you first think about what you want from a mentor. Also, remember that you can have more than one! And then read this blog post.

Spring term is beginning and we are kicking off the return of the blog with a post especially for our seniors. The Mathematics Department and Office of Alumnae Relations have organized 5-part speaker series focused on financial literacy. Read more here.

Senior Survival Series

Seniors—you’ve done it! You’ve taken all of your distributive credits, passed the swim test, polished off your thesis, and maybe even landed your first job! Now what?

The mathematics department and the Office of Alumni Relations would like to offer some tips, tricks, and advice that you may not have picked up in class. You may know how to balance your checkbook, and stash money in your savings account, but that’s just the beginning.

This spring Dorothy Wallace, professor of mathematics, and guest speakers will be offering the following five mini- lectures on the basics of financial literacy. Talks are 6:00 pm Wednesday evenings in Kemeny Hall 008.

The Paganucci Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for Dartmouth students to take part in a social entrepreneurship program being offered by the Center for Leadership at the Tuck School of Business. In general, the program supports Tuck’s efforts to study complex social issues and the ways in which businesses can create positive social and financial value; in effect, the “double bottom line.” The topic this year will address global poverty. The 2012 Paganucci Fellowships will be targeted at students with an interest in business solutions to societal problems, an aptitude for working collaboratively as part of a consulting-like team, and an appetite for making a difference in the world.

The Allen Rosenshine Minority Education and Training Fund is offering paid advertising internships to “women, minorities, persons protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act.” These internships take place during the Summer of 2012 in the BBDO offices throughout the U.S. and students will be awarded a $4000 stipend.
